Welwyn Garden City Synagogue is a warm and welcoming Orthodox Jewish community, proud to be part of the United Synagogue. Our shul serves a broad area across East and North Hertfordshire—including Stevenage, Hitchin, Letchworth, Ware, Hatfield and Hertford—and offers a spiritual home to over 200 members.
Founded during World War II by refugees from Nazi Europe and evacuees from London, our community has grown from humble beginnings into a vibrant congregation. The synagogue was officially consecrated in 1956 and continues to uphold the values of tradition, resilience, and inclusivity that shaped its early years.
Today, Welwyn Garden City is recognised as a centre of Jewish growth, attracting families seeking a peaceful lifestyle with excellent transport links to London. Our community blends the intimacy of a small shul with the energy of a forward-looking congregation, offering regular Shabbat services, festival celebrations, educational programs, and social events.
We are delighted to welcome Rabbi Adam Herszaft and Rebbetzen Racheli Herszaft as our new Rabbinic couple. Their passion for Jewish life, education, and community engagement brings fresh energy to our shul, and we look forward to the exciting chapter ahead.
Whether you’re new to the area, exploring your Jewish identity, or looking for a place to belong, Welwyn Garden City Synagogue invites you to experience the warmth, tradition, and vitality of our community.
